The Holy Spirit is pivotal in the salvation of the human soul. Our theme scripture, 1 Corinthians 12:3 declares, "No man can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit". This refers to the heartfelt declaration of the Lordship of Jesus in one's life upon believing the gospel as elaborated in Romans 10:9-10. Except the Holy Spirit broods over the human spirit, the new birth cannot happen. He is the one who brings to the sinner's heart conviction of sin. In referring to the Holy Spirit in John 16:8, Jesus said "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment". This is the convincing work of the Holy Spirit over the heart of man that gets one to repent and accept salvation in Christ Jesus. This is not just the conviction of specific sins but the very sin-nature inherited from the first Adam. You must know that any evangelical efforts that relegate the Holy Spirit will be empty, with no real and eternal impact on lives. Titus 3:5 also testifies of the Holy Spirit's role in salvation, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost". That is why a Child of God is called one born of the Spirit (John 3:8). In salvation the Holy Spirit surrounds your spirit baptizing you into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). You are sanctified by the Spirit and made God's living temple (1 Corinthians 3:16) to host God through receiving the Holy Spirit which will be discussed in our next study.
