JESUS’ DEITY SHOWN IN HIS DEATH
Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.— Matthew 27:54
The death of Jesus Christ was marked with unique and strange features that testified of His deity. Our theme scripture tells us that when the roman soldiers who were in charge of the crucifixion observed carefully several unique features, they concluded, "Truly this was the Son of God". Son of God means God in human flesh. This was an acknowledgement that though man, Jesus was different from others. Though not the first to be crucified, His death had no historic case of comparison. Matthew 27:45 records that darkness fell over all the land from midday to 3pm when Jesus was at the cross. Furthermore, to the shock of the religious leaders, the curtain separating the Holy of Holies in the temple in Jerusalem was split (without man's hands) in two from top to bottom. At the same time a historic earthquake occurred that rent masses of rocks in pieces (Matthew 27:50-51). The Roman soldiers quickly decoded these occurrences as indisputable confirmation of who Jesus said He was, the Son of God. However, the eyes of the Jewish leaders were blinded to see this, significantly showing us the blindness befallen Israel and God's mercy given to the Gentiles. Romans 11:25 says, "For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in". When Jesus died it wasn't just another man being crucified, it was God in human flesh satisfying the demands of justice for the salvation of man. Jesus is truly the Son of God, God manifested to us in a human body. Hallelujah.
