Before the children of Israel entered the Promised Land, Canaan, Moses sent twelve men to spy the land as commanded by the Lord (Numbers 13:1-2). After forty days of exploration, they returned with two different reports. One report was consolidated from ten spies while the other was from Joshua and Caleb. In Numbers 13:27 the ten spies unanimously reported to Moses and the assembly saying:” We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there”. The report seemed factual but was characterized by fear. Caleb tried to checkmate and banish their fears as recorded in Verse 30, “Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it”. Despite this interruption, these people insisted on their stand and added, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are. The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the giants there. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them” (Number 13:31-33). God called their report a bad or evil report in verse 32. From this you can also learn that majority doesn’t always mean right. This report of fear made the assembly contemplate of returning to Egypt.

While this was the case, Caleb and Joshua had a different view. Our theme scripture says Caleb had a different attitude. This was also Joshua’s attitude. It means they saw things differently. In numbers 14:6-9 we read, “Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them”. The two displayed such remarkable trust in God. It matters how you see and make interpretations. To Caleb the only factor of consideration was God being pleased with them. Have an invincible attitude that only considers God’s presence with you. That is an attitude that defies any challenge and limitation. Don’t bow down to fear because greater is He in you than He in the world (1 John 4:4). Don’t look at your natural abilities, rather focus on God’s ability working in you. Declare like Paul, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me” (Philippians 4:13). See things differently.
