PRESS TOWARD THE FINISHING LINE

Levie Gomagoma Philippians 3:14
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus
— Philippians 3:14

In John 4:34 the Lord Jesus firmly stated, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work”. He lived for God’s will and worked on finishing the work God gave Him. He was never carried away by anything. He stayed focused till He finished God’s assignment. That is the resolution of heart I want you to observe in Apostle Paul’s life as depicted in our opening scripture. He wasn’t just doing God’s work passively and blindly. He had the goal or destination in mind. He exerted the force of commitment in service towards reaching the final destination in the ministry God had given him. He was faced with many challenges but none of them diverted his attention from the goal. In Acts 20:24 he voiced out his firm resolve to serve God to the finishing line despite challenges: “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God”. This is the kind of resolve you require in fulfilling God’s purpose for your life.

No good or bad thing should defocus your life from the Lord and the fulfilment of His purpose for your life. Others started out well but fell off into confusion along the way without reaching the destination. Hear a passionate warning in Jude 1:5 (NIV): “Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe”. Many of the children of Israel perished in the wilderness though God’s destination for them was Canaan. Your destination is twofold: one is that point where you have accomplished all you are supposed to do in God’s purpose for your life. This is the zenith of your purpose fulfillment.

At this point Paul said, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”. The second side of your destination is the very meeting with our dear Lord Jesus at His soon return. If these two have not occurred, don’t relax in your faith. Keep pressing on, yielding your energies to the finishing line where you will get the prize from the Lord. Keep praying, keep studying and learning the Word, keep telling others about Him till you get to the finishing line. Keep the destination in focus always. Don’t just serve God, rather serve Him to the end.

Confession
I am empowered by the Holy Spirit to run my race with patience and perseverance. I press on towards the mark of the high calling in Christ Jesus. I stay focused. In Jesus name. Amen
