And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.— Ephesians 6:17
In our last study we looked at the belt of truth part of the armour which is the word of God. In our theme scripture today, we are given another part which is the sword of the spirit. He reveals that the sword is the word of God. What is the difference with the belt truth which was the first mentioned element of the armory? In John 17:17 the term word is translated from a Greek word logos which the whole embodiment of the God's revelation given to us. In Ephesians 6:17, the same word is translated from a Greek word rhema which means the spoken word. The sword of the Spirit therefore deals with the word of God being spoken or declared. So we don't just keep truth in our hearts but we have to speak truth. Truth spoken is a sword of the Spirit. This means when we declare God's word, we are actually on the offensive or attacking operation in the warfare. This dismantles satanic schemes and plans. Revelation 19:15 declares "And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God". This is how the Lord will smite the nations at His second coming, by the word of His mouth. This is what He wants us to do in reigning over all forces of darkness in our day. God's word in our mouth is a sword of the spirit executing judgments over evil. Have the word in your heart and in your mouth. Psalm 2:2 talks about declaring the decree. The decree is what God has said and you are supposed to make declaration based on that. That is the sword of the Spirit.
