And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand— 1 Samuel 25:32-33
Ecclesiastes 9:14-18 records an interesting story of a poor man whose wisdom saved the city. The man gave a strategy which led to the deliverance of the city. In today’s article I will show you how this wisdom worked in and through a woman named Abigail who was a wife to Nabal, a rich man who had a sheep ranch. You can read this story in 1 Samuel 25 for a wider and detailed account. David sent servants to ask for some livestock wool from Nabal. To David’s surprise, Nabal disrespectfully railed on the delegation refusing to help despite the kindness David had shown to him before. This angered David and he swiftly mobilized to attack Nabal and his household. One of Nabal’s young men told Abigail what Nabal had done to David’s servants. This young man pleaded with Abigail to intervene and said, “But the men (of David) were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we anything, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields. They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial that a man cannot speak to him” (1 Samuel 25:15-17).
Upon hearing this, Abigail strategized for timely pacification of David’s anger. She didn’t wait for David’s arrival. She didn’t procrastinate. 1 Samuel 25:18 says, “Then Abigail hurriedly took two hundred loaves of bread, two barrels of wine, five dressed sheep, two bushels of roasted grain, one hundred raisin cakes,
and two hundred fig cakes, and packed them onto donkeys”. She went hurriedly and met David on the way and humbly, yet wisely pleaded with David while openly acknowledging Nabal’s foolishness. This mirrors the intercessory ministry we all have in Christ. Our theme scripture captures David’s response to her wise intervention. David recognized that it was God who had caused Abigail to act that way, preventing destruction of lives. This shows that it was God’s wisdom working in her. Allow God’s wisdom function in you through your unwavering yielding to His Word and intimate fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Your life will be granted sharpness of sight and quickness of judgment and response in line with God’s will. Wisdom is the principal thing. With it you will prevent calamities from taking place. With God’s wisdom you are empowered to judge and respond rightly and timey. It eliminates dullness and procrastination from your life. God’s wisdom is your defense, through which you avoid and prevent unpleasant things from happening while dealing excellently.
