Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness— Psalm 30:4
The scriptures are replete with instructions on praising God with songs. This shows us the special interest God has in singing as a vehicle of His praise. God loves singing. Hebrews 2:12 records the prophetic voice of the Lord Jesus about singing praises to God: “I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee”. You can see His heart concerning singing God’s praise. Singing God’s praise should never be relegated in our gatherings of worship. Hear the Psalmist’s urge in our theme scripture, “Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness”. The house of God should be full of God’s praise. Hebrews 13:15 further enjoins us: “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name”. Corporately or individually, offering praises through your lips should be an unending ministration you do in your life.
With regards to composition of songs, God’s word should make up the substance of your songs of praise. That is why you must seek to know His word progressively. Those who lead music in Church should be dedicated to learning the word of God. As you learn, be willing to drop what is not right and make necessary adjustments to communicate spiritual truth through songs. Don’t sing a song because it’s famous while it is empty of divine truth. Psalm 56:10 gives us an important insight: “In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word”. This shows you that His praises should be substantiated with His word. That is what the Lord Jesus meant by worshiping God in truth (John 4:24) because truth is His Word (John 17:17). The next study article will add details on worshiping God in spirit and truth.
