DON’T DESPISE WHAT YOU HAVE
Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil— 2 kings 4:2 NIV
In our opening scripture, Elisha the prophet asked the widow who was at risk of having her two sons taken captive by creditors of her deceased husband. She cried out for help from Elisha. To her surprise, Elisha asked her, “What do you have in your house?” In her answer she indicated having nothings at all except a small jar of oil. This shows you that with respect to market value that quantity of oil was insignificant. She was advised to borrow other jars and pour out that little oil into the jars until they filled. This was a miracle, to have little oil (of insignificant market value) fill several jars with significant market value. I want you to notice that it started with what she had, not what she did not have. She managed to sell the oil and pay back the loan and still remained with some oil. The power of God worked with what she had. A similar occurrence was when Jesus asked the disciples to provide food to over 5,000 people. Andrew one of the disciples responded to Him: “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? (John 6:9). He despised what was available. Jesus took the five loaves and gave thanks to God and gave the disciples to distribute to the people. The power of God worked on what was available and all the people ate.
The power of God worked with what the widow of zarephath had though she had despised it. When Elijah asked her food, she responded, “I don’t have any bread, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, which we may eat it and die” (1 Kings 17:12 NIV). When she obeyed Elijah, her oil and
flour did not finish until the rains descended upon the earth. 1 Kings 17:15-16 indicates, “She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah”. Don’t despise what you have. God’s power can work with what you have and get you into the experience of abundance. Many times people focus on what they feel they don’t have to help them reach to their goals. But today take stock of what you have in assets, skills, knowledge and many other areas. Anything can be seed and if put in the right environment of the Spirit’s power, you will see great results.
