But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer— 1 Peter 4:7
In our previous study, we were admonished and reminded of the coming of the Lord and end of all things. We learnt that things will happen just as the bible indicated. In view of the imminent end of all things, our opening scripture instructs: “be therefore sober and watch unto prayer”. This is what I am driving to you today, “be therefore sober and watch unto prayer”. Here He is dealing with spiritual soberness and vigilance. Your life must demonstrate that you are looking forward to meeting the Lord Jesus. He mentions the element of prayer in His admonition. This lets us know that prayerfulness is watchfulness in the spirit. Through prayer, you will have your spirituality enhanced. In prayer your sensitivity to God’s will is sharpened. Through prayer your ability for spiritual detection is improved. As you detect God’s will, you can also know Satan’s moves and you can confidently say “I am not ignorant of his devices or strategies” as Paul indicated in 2 Corinthians 2:11.
Don’t allow prayer to be watered down in your life. Don’t be deceived with those who despise prayer. Don’t join those who mock (even jokingly) those who are prayerful. Respect and guard your devotion in prayer. Don’t tread it with anything in this life. Don’t allow your business, family, friends, work even ministry take away your devotion towards God in prayer. All His days on earth, our Lord Jesus demonstrated prayerfulness. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 offers the priceless and passionate encouragement: “Pray without ceasing”. Prayerfulness is your watchfulness in the spirit. Be prayerful as you await the blowing of the trumpet, which will sound at the great catching away of the saint, where the dead in Christ shall rise first and we who are alive and remain in Him shall be caught up together
with them to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). Prayerfulness is preparation for the coming of the Lord. Hear the Lord’s Instruction fresh from Luke 21:36: “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man”.
