We are enjoined in our opening scripture to carry the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. The term “word” is translated from Greek word “rhema”. Rhema is the spoken word. So this is not talking about logos which is the written word of God. Rhema is God’s word spoken by you. When you speak forth God’s word, it is an offensive weapon that dismantles satanic plans, structures and systems. So you can see that you are not only equipped with weapons of defense but also offensive. Ponder over what God said to Jeremiah the Prophet in Jeremiah 1:9-10, “Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant”. This scripture reveals that God put words in Jeremiah’s mouth to use them (speak them forth) in uprooting and pulling down evil structures and systems in his day. It is the same with us today.

Our supreme example is the Lord Jesus. Revelation 19:15 prophetically declares how the Lord will destroy his enemies, “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God”. He will execute judgment over the nations with a sharp sword from His mouth. This is about His spoken word, the sword of the Spirit. Isaiah 11:4 calls that sword the rod of His mouth: “But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked”. Joshua 1:8 instructs us: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”. Don’t let the word of God depart from your mouth. In other words talk the Word of God. This is rhema, the spoken word. Sometimes, this Rhema is a specific word for a particular situation delivered to you by the Holy Spirit and you have to speak it forth. But don’t just wait for those special times, always speak forth what God has said concerning you in His Word.
