Whatever we offer in service to God has to be done rightly in accordance to His set guidance. For instance in the Old Testament God told them the description of the kind and quality of animals to be offered for sacrifices. God instructed them in Numbers 22:20: “Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf”. And God told them how they were supposed to make the offerings. Sometimes there are those that think the grace of the New Testament means no set guidance from the Lord. This thinking has led to indiscipline among saints of God. Grace does not mean disorder. Today I want to talk to you about the ministry of praise which all of us belong to. We are called to offer sacrifices of praise to God (Hebrews 13:15). It’s important that we discharge this noble call rightly in God’s eyes. Singing is one key vehicle of praise. Our theme scripture enjoins us to sing praises with understanding. This means sing praises with the understanding that God gives you. This is spiritual understanding. You don’t praise God the way you feel. Paul prayed for the Colossians Church: “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” (Colossians 1:9). In our day we have witnessed songs that are scripturally incorrect being presented as praise songs. We have seen people dancing fleshly and irresponsibly in the name of mimicking David. They are heavily ignorant of the kind of dance David did. David danced before God and not before people as others do (2 Samuel 6:14, 21). A dance which comes with praise is a result of enraptured praise within you and it’s not rehearsed and gives no attention to the flesh. You are so conscious of God’s presence than people. This is a dance in the spirit and is not a response to musical instruments. In John 4:24, Jesus unequivocally declared, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth”. He described clearly how to worship God rightly, which is in spirit and in truth. This means worship is not of the flesh but of the spirit and it must be inspired by the scriptures, God’s body of truth. If God’s word hasn’t inspired it, it can’t be accepted by the Lord no matter how pleasant it is to our feelings. When you stay in God’s word, you will praise Him rightly.
