1 John 3:9 declares, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God”. This clearly shows that our new nature in Christ Jesus is superior to sin. It shows that God completely defeated sin in Christ’s vicarious death and resurrection. This informs us that everyone who is born again has power over sin. This is what our theme scripture is communicating, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace”. It is a categorical and unequivocal declaration of the supremacy of the new creation in Christ over sin. As a child of God you are in and under God’s grace. Our salvation was received through faith and it is by grace. We didn’t have to obey the law or do any good thing. In this grace we have power over sin. It is only spiritual infants in Christ who struggle with sin. If you sin, forgiveness is available in Christ for you to receive but don’t stay there. Grow up to exercise dominion over sin (1 John 2:1-2). This is why spiritual growth must be pursued with zest and utmost seriousness in your life. Don’t stay a baby Christian for long, you must grow. As you grow, you walk in dominion.

The Christian life is a life of absolute victory over Satan, sin, death and the corrupt systems of this world. If you are to still struggle with sin, then why did Jesus die and rise? Romans 8:3 (AMPC) enlightens us on what has happened to sin because of the sacrifice of Christ: “For God has done what the Law could not do, [its power] being weakened by the flesh [the entire nature of man without the Holy Spirit]. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who 20 accept that sacrifice]”. As a result of Christ’s death and resurrection, sin has been defeated and deprived of its power over all who accept Jesus. This means you are not supposed to sin and it is not compulsory to sin because you have power over it in your new nature in Christ. You are not a slave of sin. Walk in dominion over sin.
